The 2011 Riviera Hotel Mid week series has been run and won, with David Shepherd's Shaw Contracting taking the popular Port Dalrymple Yacht Club series for the first time.

The series went down to the wire with the results of the last race deciding the series, with the series win going to Shaw Contracting by 0.5 points from Stephen McElwee's Lawless.

The six week Riviera Hotel Mid week series has produced some interesting results from some of the most competitive sailing seen during the season. The evening courses around the bay and back to PDYC, take full advantage of the usually more mellow late afternoon breezes. 'For me there is no better time of the day to sail' says Obsession’s David Allan 'fast, flat water, a steady light breeze, everyone enjoys the mid weeks'

Race one in the series saw Mojo sailed by Bruce Eadie get the win some forty five seconds ahead of Shaw Contracting’s David Shepherd, whilst a week later Eadie and Shepherd were displaced to the mid field, by a Lawless MacElwee, the all girl crew on Cordon Bleu and Contract Killer Dmitri Allan.

Riviera Hotel Mid week three with another roll of the wind dice, this time favouring Leon Williams Capriccio ahead of Lawless and Mojo.

Race four produced a very close finish. Shaw Contracting finishing twenty two seconds ahead of both Lawless and Obsession, tied for second, a mere nine seconds ahead of seasoned campaigner Ron Shepherd in This way up in third. Shaw Contracting, Lawless and Contract Killer took the fifth race ahead in a clear one, two, and three finish.

The final race Riviera Hotel Mid week series 2011 was to be the decider. An Easterly blew across the start – finish line, and the course set, an upwind beat to cross the incoming tide to Bryant’s Bay, then down the length of the bay and then a jibed spinnaker run home to finish. The race saw cat and mouse tactics as crews traded wind for tide, to see their fortunes reversed in the windless tidal back eddies of Bryant’s Bay.

The final run for the line in a fading breeze saw Shaw Contracting scrape home just seven seconds ahead of Obsession. Ron Shepherds This way up found its way into third not far ahead of Lawless.

Final results gave a series win to Shaw Contracting, David Shepherd on 11 points. Lawless Steve McElwee fell to second by half point on 11.5 points, with David Allan’s Obsession third on 18.5 points.
