Brass Monkey Open at Yorkshire Dales SC and despite a recent four inch snow fall on the previous day and subsequent clearing of the road by a plough, 53 boats and 24 visitors entered.
With the wind blowing a gentleforce 1-2, the race officer decided to take full advantage of the over flowing lake and set a long course using the full reservoir. With so many sailors looking to get a good start, a general recall was inevitable. The black flag kept them all in check for a perfect second start. The 49ers, as expected lead the field around having some very close racing. Musto Skiff sailor Dylan Noble wasn’t letting them get away and secured the win. The Fireball of Neil Thornton (a comeback after six years?) with world champion crew Richard Wagstaff held off other challengers for second place, and finishing off the top three were Jack Banks and Penny Jeffcoat in their Scorpion. A great meal deal lunch followed after which a slight course change, which was to make big differences for some of the sailors with spinnakers.
There was a clean start for race 2, the wind having picked up to a good force 2-3. Matty and James Lyons's 49er nearly had a full leg lead over the other 49ers as they passed the windward mark. Chris Pickles and Matt Sharman, tried hard to make up the difference to no avail. Keith Escritt and Phil Priestley were having kite issues and lost ground. With the wind deciding to pick up a little, this brought Phil Whitehead’s Vortex into contention to secure third position. The Lyons brothers bagged a solid second but improving on their race one result was Thornton and Wagstaff to take the bullet.
A great event for sailors and spectators alike with the conditions being kind for a late February sail. With a first and second, Neil Thornton and Richard Wagstaff in their Fireball sailed consistently well for the overall win. The 49er of Lyons/Lyons edged into second and Noble’s Musto topped off the top three.
A big thanks to race officer Terry Pressdee and his crew for a great job done, the galley staff for great food efficiently served and Mike Saul of MSDS for sponsoring the prizes.
