NSW Maritime - Sydney Harbour safety for Queens Visit

'NSW Maritime'
NSW Maritime - Special event boating traffic controls will be in place when the sister ships Queen Mary 2 and the Queen Elizabeth visit Sydney over 22-23 February, according to Chief Executive Steve Dunn.

Mr Dunn said a ‘moving’ exclusion zone would be activated around the famous cruise liners as they navigate through the harbour. The exclusion zone will apply to all recreational and commercial vessels and will be enforced by NSW Maritime officers and the Water Police.

'The visit of the Queens at the same time in Sydney Harbour will make a wonderful sight at first light and is expected to attract a small fleet of vessels,' he said.

'Safety afloat is a priority. The Sydney boating community have a good appreciation of what is required during special aquatic events such as the visit of the Queens.

'Ships like the 150,000 tonne Queen Mary 2 and the 90,000 tonne Queen Elizabeth are restricted in their ability to manoeuvre especially in the confines of the harbour and all skippers of smaller craft must be safe and responsible and stay out of their way.'

Fundamental boating safety rules include the following:

* Always travel at a speed that is safe for the conditions;
* Always keep a proper lookout;
* Keep to the right side of channels and fairways; and
* Show navigation lights at night or times of reduced visibility.

Special event navigation controls include the following:

* All vessels to keep at least 500m clear of the bows, 60m clear of sides and 60m clear of the stern of the ships;
* Commercial vessels must keep at least 30m clear of the Queen Elizabeth berthed at the Overseas Passenger Terminal; and
* All vessels must keep at least 60m clear of the Queen Mary berthed at Garden Island.

Sydney Ports vessels will escort the Queens up Sydney Harbour, including fast response vessel Millers Point and fire tug Ted Noffs.

The Queen Mary 2 is expected to enter the Heads at 5.30am on Tuesday 22 February. The Queen Elizabeth will be 5-10 minutes astern. The Queen Mary 2 will berth at Garden Island and the Queen Elizabeth at the Overseas Passenger Terminal by 7am. Queen Elizabeth is due to leave the harbour at noon and Queen Mary 2 at 5.00pm on Wednesday 23 February.
