RORC Caribbean 600 nearing the start

Caribbean 600 and with just 24 hours to go before the start the nerves are kicking in. Sun burnt noses, hands and feet are the order of the day, after the final training session yesterday morning. The Caribbean sunshine seems to be as strong as the rum punches the crew are drinking in the bars in an evening!!

The Skippers race briefing yesterday evening gave those in charge of the 34 vessels racing the Caribbean 600 the chance to look at the Sailing Instructions and also the weather for the next few days. Within the fleet are such impressive vessels as the 100 foot British ICAP Leopard, as well as RORC Yacht of the Year 2010 Tonnerre, very well known to the rest of the RORC UK sailors.

The weather for the start in Falmouth Harbour is looking very favourable with the air temperature a balmy 27º C with a fair breeze flowing in from the northeast, meaning that the trade winds are functioning, but it’s an ever-changing picture which will keep skippers and navigators alike on their toes for the first 24 hours.

Each yacht in the Caribbean 600 has onboard a tracking device which send a position report hourly to the Race Office and is then uploaded to a chartlet so you are able to follow any yacht in the race, with their progress and also where they are in relation to the rest of the racing yachts.
