Gold Coast Cat Week kicks off

One of Gold Coast Cat Week’s biggest fleets has assembled at the Southport Yacht Club for the fourth running of the event.

With 27 boats entered in the weeklong event, a large mix of classes are doing battle on the waters of the 'Broadwater' for the overall title. This weekend is also doubling as the South-East Queensland Nacra Class Championships and is a great lead-up to The Great Race, a 37nm passage race from the Gold Coast to RQYS, Brisbane.

Two Races were contested today in a 10 – 15 knot Nor-Easter. The Nacra F18 'Wazza Who?', sailed by Adam Beatte and Jamie Lestner leading the way with two race wins, but the margin was not a big one in either race. SYC sailors Guy Obren and Joel Turner in the Nacra 5.8 'Allante' finished the day with a second and third to sit in second overall and the Nacra F18 of Warren 'Wazza' Guinea and Marva Van Helden hold third place.

Amongst the group close behind is regatta sponsors Steve Curtis and Kerry Noyes from Fastway Couriers in their boat 'Wayfast', and last year’s runner up, the Arrow Cat of Darryl Skinner, 'Airpower II'.

With a forecast of similar conditions tomorrow before a southerly change on Monday and all of the visiting boats working out the local tricks, racing is likely to get more exciting as the regatta progresses.

Racing continues tomorrow and details of the event can be found here
