Heineken Cape to Rio yacht race update.

City of Cape Town skipper Gerry Hegie will have to keep the champagne on ice and the party hats under wraps for a couple of days before he can be declared winner on handicap of the Heineken Cape to Rio yacht race.

Hegie’s 42ft Lavranos reached Rio on Tuesday morning, completing the Atlantic crossing in 17 days, 12 minutes and 25 seconds, just over 24 hours behind line honours winner Prodigy.

'It’s exciting to arrive in Rio with a mixed crew of Brazilians and South Africans on board,' said the 25-year-old Hegie at the Rio Yacht Club on Tuesday morning. 'Three and a half months of intense preparation has finally paid off.'

The remaining 15 yachts in the race are averaging about four knots and it’s unlikely any of the handicap contenders will get enough breeze in the next 48 hours to spoil Hegie’s party.

The 63ft maxi Grand Filou II is expected to arrive in Rio only on Thursday, followed by Xtra-Link, Yachtport SA and Ciao Bella, which is lying second on handicap and still 594 nautical miles away from Rio after reporting a 24-hour run of only 94nm on Monday.

Perie Banou II is in third place on handicap, still 920nm off Rio, followed by Xtra-Link and Yachtport SA.
