ICSA Match Racing Clinic - The North U Varsity Match Racing Clinic will take place on February 18-20, 2011 at the Rollins College Alfond Boat House, Winter Park, Florida (near Orlando). This Clinic will be coached by three-time National Match Racing Champion Dave Perry. Dave will coach the advanced tactics and strategies needed to be competitive and successful in Match Racing on the National level. He was at the 2010 Intercollegiate Match Racing National Championship, and will break down the videotape of that racing to show what the teams did well and what they could have done better. On the water, Dave will run the sailors through all the scenarios, with on-the-spot feedback, and video replay after sailing. The Clinic will focus on the three major aspects of Match Racing: The Pre-Start Upwind and Downwind Tactics Killing Penalties: Fee: There is no charge for participating in this Clinic. The costs of participating (boat use and coach fees) are generously underwritten by a grant from an anonymous supporter of match racing and the support of Lake Baldwin Florida Community Sailing LLC. Associated costs - Each team is responsible for arranging and paying for their own transportation (we will try to arrange local transportation from and to the airport and sailing center for teams that need it), accommodation and food/beverage. Fly In to the Orlando airport - Winter Park is about a 20 minute drive from the airport. Accommodation: Information on area motels is available from Larry Landrigan. Rates average around $100 a night for a room with two queen beds. Boats - Geary 18 keelboats with main, jib and spinnaker – sailed by teams of 3 people. Total crew weight will not be a factor in the Clinic. Number of teams - This Clinic will be capped at six (6) teams, *accepted on a first enter - first serve basis.* To enter, a team must call North U to reserve a spot (number below), and send in an entrance deposit check for $100 made out to North U, which will be refunded when the team attends the Clinic, or cancels by writing to Dave Perry by February 11, or is not accepted. North U can also take credit card information over the phone. For more information on the Clinic, contact: To contact North U: - 203 245 0727 29 High Field Lane, Madison, CT 06443 Additional information: Who May Come - The boats are sailed by 3 people. Each team can bring an additional sailor if they wish to, plus all teams are welcomed to come with a coach. THE SCHEDULE I have planned the Clinic for Friday-Sunday. The three full days provides the time to adequately teach the specific tactics and techniques of match racing, including the unique pre-start, and leave time to do some racing to put it all together. I plan to begin at 10:00am on Friday, February 18, and end by 4:00pm on Sunday, February 20. I plan to end Friday and Saturday evening by 9:00pm. If a team, or sailor, cannot arrive until Friday evening due to classes, that is fine with me, though obviously they will miss a day's worth of instruction and training. *Please let me know immedately if you are in that boat*. Friday, February 18 10:00am - Opening session: Introduction to Match Racing Match Racing Tactics - Upwind & Downwind On-Water upwind & downwind race training 7:30-9:00pm - Evening Session: The Match Racing Umpire and Penalty system Tactics and Strategies for Killing a Penalty Saturday, February 19 9:00am - Morning Session: Pre-Start Tactics and Strategies On-Water pre-start training Full races 7:30 - 9:00pm - Evening Session 2: Video analysis of the 2010 Intercollegiate National Match Racing Championship Sunday, February 20 9:00am - Morning Session 2: Advanced Match Racing Tactics and Strategies On-Water race training *4:00 - End Clinic* Food and Water - Each team and sailor is on their own for food and water. We will try to organize a dutch treat pizza feed for Friday night, and something along those lines Saturday night. Next Step - Once I have a confirmation from a team that it is coming*, I will send it several useful match racing documents to read and study before the Clinic, which will greatly speed up the learning process.
