Fourteen Hartley TS 16s took to the water on the first day of their National Championship, hosted by Napier Sailing Club and held in conjunction with the Noelex 25 National Championship.

Conditions were relatively light but the wind direction was unsettled throughout an otherwise warm and sunny day and the race officials were kept busy with constant course changes. However, Race Officer Tim Sandall was impressed with the accuracy of forecast service Predict Wind, which successfully predicted most of the day's big shifts with uncanny precision.

Two races were completed in the afternoon, testing the crews and offering no advantage to the local sailors. That said, Paul Dunford's Tramp took out the first race and then placed second to share the lead with Gareth Insley's Pronto, from Manukau, who reciprocated.

Also proving consistency was possible despite today's testing conditions were New Plymouth boats Stratos, skippered by Simon Holdt, and Barefoot, skippered by Paul Moriarty, taking third and fourth places respectively in both races.

Six more races are planned for Friday and Saturday.
