Sail-World has been advised that the 44m superyacht Salperton was dismasted on Saturday, 22 January 2011, whilst sailing off Guadeloupe with mainsail and blade in light conditions. Nobody was hurt and the yacht made port safely.

Salperton was launched in 2009 and its Southern Spars mast carries PBO rigging by Future Fibres.

Salperton has crossed the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans (twice) and has been sailed in all weathers for very many miles without ever giving cause for concern.

The cause of the dismasting is not known at this time. The mast is broken approx 6m above deck, some distance below the D1 tangs and Spreader 1.

Paul MacDonald of Southern Spars, New Zealand, is travelling to Antigua to discuss the incident with the captain and crew, and to inspect the damage to both the mast and rigging. He expects to meet with the owner during this week too.

It is expected that the wider large sailing yacht fraternity will be advised as more information becomes available.
