Festival of Sails 2013 - Notice of Race

'SAILING - Festival of Sails 2013 Geelong, Victoria'    Andrea Francolini VALIANT

Notice of Race for the southern hemisphere’s largest annual sailing festival and Victoria’s longest running sporting event, the Festival of Sails, was made available today by the host club, Royal Geelong Yacht Club.

When entries opened for the 2013 regatta, the entry system was flooded by those wishing to capitalise on the generous Early Bird discount. RGYC is again encouraging participants to get their entries in early to enjoy the substantial saving.

The Notice of Race (NoR) is the all-important document that will help guide competitors through the regatta format and conditions of entry and will be made available online on the event website.

This year also signals the change in RGYC Flag Officers and the Event Executive Committee. Long standing committee member and new Event Chairman, Paul Smart said of the changes planned for 2014, 'With a backdrop of many years of history, it is an honour to be filling the role of Chairman - Festival of Sails 2014. Also, it is my pleasure to announce the release of the Notice of Race for the 2014 event.

'The Committee has spent many hours preparing for this great Regatta in anticipation of the 'best ever' event. Through our planning phases we have constantly asked ourselves the question – 'what can we do to give participants a great experience on Corio Bay?'

'The early issue of the Notice of Race, followed closely by the Application for Entries is planned to give skippers and crew plenty of time to prepare for the January race days.

'The Regatta Committee looks forward to receiving your entry and we wish you well in your preparation for the big weekend.'

Entries will open online in the coming days, who will be able to beat the 2013 first entrant, Royal Yacht Club of Victoria member Paul Lindemann, owner of Biddy Hu II, who was able to process his entry within hours of the system going live.

On Friday 24th January the spectacle of the mass start of the historic 34 nautical mile Melbourne to Geelong passage race, the largest single start of any Australian regatta or race, will provide a very different view for St Kilda Beach-goers.

The passage race finish will give the green light to start the regatta’s unique Shoreside Festival, set up either side of the Royal Geelong Yacht Club’s stunning waterfront position.

The Shoreside Festival will begin on the weekend, Sunday being Australia Day with the Bay FM Fireworks Spectacular at sundown.

The festival will feature over 60 acts across three stages, over 80 stall holders and great food and wine, as well many family friendly activities to keep the non-sailors entertained both on and off the water through until Monday afternoon.
