SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week Day 3 - A small barbeque

At SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week 2013 racing continued today for the IRC Racing and Multihull Racing Divisions, while it was a lay day for the Cruising Divisions and the Cruising Multihulls and the sailors from fleets were enjoying their time ashore.

The deck at Peppers Resort was overflowing with sailors and families from Townsville and Magnetic Island enjoying the entertainment and refreshments on Fathers Day.

The Race Committee set a triangle followed by a windward/leeward leg or as Regatta Director Denis Thompson said with a smile and a trace of New Zealand accent 'The fleet will be sailing a small BBQ, a Chop and a Sausage.'

In the IRC monohull fleet, Bob Steel´s TP52 Quest, the 2008 Rolex Sydney Hobart winner and ´Townsville's own Leon Thomas Sydney 38 Guilty Pleasures IV and CYCA Commodore Howard Piggott’s Beneteau First 40 Flying Cloud were all early on the start line.

Quest pulled away from the line and circled to start late, but Guilty Pleasures IV and Flying Cloud were OCS and had to go back.

Quest was first to the top mark, Guilty Pleasures IV was second but close behind was Flying Cloud.

Just as those two monohulls reached the top mark, the lead multihull, the trimaran Carbon Credit, from the Multihull Racing division which started five minutes behind them, smoked past them, at probably twice their speed.

Down the run, soon after their spinnaker hoist, Guilty Pleasure crew were still tidying up, when they were hit by a solid gust and rounded up costing precious seconds.

Quest took line honours by 16 mins from Guilty Pleasures IV with Flying Cloud 89 seconds in arrears.
On handicap Quest broke through to her first win of this regatta. Behind her there was just four seconds on corrected time between second placed Flying Cloud and Guilty Pleasures IV. That round up cost dearly.

Overall Guilty Pleasures still leads with 1, 1, and 3. Quest 4, 2, 1, is second and Flying Cloud is third just two points behind in the six race, no drop series.

If Piggott and crew can climb into second place overall in the three remaining races, then they can outscore Black Jack to take the inaugural Queensland Season of Sailing Cup.

Howard Piggott, CYCA Commodore said- 'It was our best day on the water, perfect for the slightly heavier First 40, we did better against the Sydney 38 in the chop. We were a little too eager at the start, were over early and had to go back.

‘From the back we had to go right and we picked up a nice shift there and were well placed at the top mark and we held on well.

‘It’s a great stretch of water to sail in and a great venue and we are enjoying this regatta hugely.

‘We’ve been deliberately not looking closely at the Queensland Season of Sailing overall point score until now, but with three races to go, we will be pushing hard.’

Still the series leader, in spite of his worst result today, Leon Thomas commented ‘I was a little bit anxious on the start and was over early but Flying Cloud was over early as well so we were both obviously raring to go.

‘The course suited the long waterline TP52 really well with the reaching triangle in there and they really did a great job and skipped out and had a really good race.

‘Flying Cloud trucked in that wind really well, but we were inside them on the set and we were still doing a few jobs and did a little bit of a round up. Looking back it was an expensive error as they beat us by four seconds.’

In the Multihull Racing fleet, Peter Hawker's Farrier 32 foiling racer Carbon Credit took line honours again, from Andrew Stansky’s Fantasia, only two minutes between them.

Carbon Credit’s South Australian owner skipper Peter Hawker was all smiles as he has been all week,

'We are still very much learning to sail these all carbon racers.

‘Airlie Beach Race Week was really the first regatta for us and we did not have any light weather sails.
‘But Magnetic 2013 has been just fabulous. Just perfect conditions for this to fly. Once that winds gets up to 12 knots and you can feel the boat being lifted up on the foil going to windward and for multihulls it’s pretty good, pretty fantastic.

‘We have two of these boats in South Australia and our goal is now we get them back together and try and tune them against each other. We don’t know when to foil, when to cant the mast, when to put up kites. So we can only get faster.’

In spite of an ever lifting handicap, Fantasia was atop the table again for third time ahead of Alasdair Noble's McMoggy with Carbon Credit third.

Fantasia - SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week 2013 -  SeaLink Magnetic Island Race Week Media   Click Here to view large photo

Overall Fantasia, the 2013 Multihull Australia champion has three wins, from three races, behind them McMoggy is second with a fourth and two seconds, with Carbon Credit third, with a two, four and three.

Denis Thompson, Principal Race Officer commented 'how can perfection get better. I think it has been a great regatta after years where the wind has been quite light and the sea breeze has been coming in late. It’s been very enjoyable. The sea breezes that we have had and the south easterlies with the trade wind, sea breezes it has been really good to get some good races in. A lot of happy sailors out there.

‘Tomorrow I think we are going to have more of the same and will try and set some interesting courses for them all and windward leewards for IRC. It should be good.

‘Today the chops and sausage were perfect for the BBQ. Tomorrow we will probably go back to a couple of sausages for the racing fleets.‘
