Environment Minister announces Lakes funding for local partnerships

Ryan Smith, Minister of Environment and Climate Change has announced an extra $100,000 to support local action to protect and enhance Victoria’s iconic Gippsland Lakes.

'As one of Australia’s internationally recognised wetlands and a key asset for Victoria’s regional economic growth, the protection and improvement of the Gippsland Lakes is a high priority for the Victorian Coalition Government,' Mr Smith said.

The Coalition Government is investing $10 million in the protection of the Lakes through the Gippsland Lakes Environment Fund.Mr Smith made the announcement during a two-day tour of the Gippsland Lakes region with Member for Gippsland East Tim Bull, where they inspected a number of government and community partnership projects aimed at caring for the Lakes’ environment.

Mr Smith and Mr Bull saw first-hand around $470,000 worth of projects involving Landcare and Conservation Management Networks, Trust for Nature, Greening Australia and local community groups.'Protecting the future health of the Lakes is a Coalition Government election commitment that is being delivered through local investment in environmental improvements, important research and stronger community involvement,' Mr Smith said.

Mr Bull praised the role of local community-based groups and volunteers in helping deliver on-ground works in partnership with the Coalition Government.'The Coalition Government is committed to supporting environmental partnerships and is pleased to provide funding support for local projects, involving local people, that protect and restore the natural values of the Gippsland Lakes,' Mr Bull said.

Mr Smith said projects funded through the Gippsland Lakes Environment Fund included works along Forge Creek, Clydebank Morass and other wetlands around Lake Wellington, where activities include re-establishing native woodland, pest plant and animal control, protection of waterways and restoration of natural ecosystems.
