Stena Match Cup Sweden - Women's Trophy returns to Marstrand

At last year’s Stena Match Cup Sweden, women’s racing was left out of the event because of the tight schedule between the World Cup in Gothenburg and the Olympics in London. This summer, the Women’s Trophy is back at Marstrand and the women’s elite will once again compete in one of the most prestigious match racing regattas in the world.

Among the six skippers competing for the Stena Match Cup Sweden Women’s Trophy is Ekaterina Skudina (RUS) who came forth in the Olympics 2012 and grabbed second place in the World Cup in Korea a few weeks ago. She has already shown that she likes racing at Marstrand and she won Stena Match Cup Sweden back in 2010. In the line-up you will also find the Dutch skipper Klaartje Zuiderbaan, Volvo Ocean Race 2001-02 and test sailor for Team SCA, and Stephanie Roble (USA) who claimed second place in the US Women’s Match Racing Championships 2013.

Three Swedish skippers are in the line-up; Anna Kjellberg, Caroline Sylvan and Anna Kjellgren all skipper teams racing for the Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club.

Anna Kjellberg and her team came fifth in the World Cup in Korea and she is currently on top of the ranking in the Women’s International Match Racing Series after two events. Kjellberg got her big breakthrough at Marstrand in 2008 when she competed in Stena Match Cup Sweden for the first time and reached second place. The year after, she was once again came close to grabbing the big Trophy when she and her team lost the deciding match in the final by less than a meter. Stena Match Cup Sweden is not a part of the newly started international match racing series for women but there is plenty of prestige to fight for in the classic match racing regatta at Marstrand.

'It’s going to be the highlight of the season and we are looking forward to returning to our favorite arena and to our favorite boats – the DS37:s,' says Anna Kjellberg.

Both Kjellberg and Caroline Sylvan will be racing the World Series event Danish Open in Skovshoved, Denmark this week.

'We have plenty of events to sail thanks to the new World Series and we will build up for Marstrand and tweak our form when we race matches. That’s how we get the best training because the desire to win makes us want to improve all the different aspects of our sailing.'

Stena Match Cup Sweden is sailed 1-6 July at Marstrand on the Swedish west coast. Six teams will be competing for the Women’s Trophy and the event starts with a double Round Robin. The best teams enter the knockout stage with semifinals and a final. For the first time at Marstrand, the women will be sailing on the race arena in the same flights as the men – this makes the racing more efficient and gives the spectators less time to wait between cheering for their home teams.
