Colours of India to illuminate Australian Nat'l Maritime Museum

'Chinese migration'    Australian National Maritime Museum
The Australian Nat'l Maritime Museum is ecstatic to announce that its iconic roof and surrounds will be illuminated with the Colours of India as part the renowned Vivid Sydney from 24 May to 10 June 2013. Following the success of the its inaugural Waves of Migration projection show earlier this year, the museum will again become the canvas for a stunning son et lumiere.

To complement its major new exhibition, East of India – forgotten trade with Australia, the projections will take inspiration from the colours, patterns, flavours, and sounds of India.

'The Australian National Maritime Museum is incredibly proud to be part of Vivid’s extension into Darling Harbour. The museum is one of Sydney’s major cultural attractions so it is wonderful to have the opportunity to engage with the thousands of visitors that Vivid will bring into our lively precinct,' said Museum director Kevin Sumption today.

Designed by celebrated architect Philip Cox, the National Maritime Museum’s roof is over 1,700 square metres, meaning the projections will be visible from vantage points around Darling Harbour including Pyrmont Bridge and King Street Wharf. The museum’s harbourside walkway will also remain open throughout the festival to give everyone the best opportunity to see the Darling Harbour precinct bathed in light.

Colours of India will premiere on 24 May 2013, and run nightly from 6pm – 12am until 10 June 2013. The projection show is free and suitable for all ages.

The National Maritime Museum’s latest exhibition, East of India – Forgotten trade with Australia, explores the centuries-old allure of Asia to European traders, the importance of early colonial trade routes with India and the spectacular rise and fall of the famous English East India Company. Opening on 1 June 2013, the exhibition also looks at Australia’s current relationship with this emerging superpower. For further information about the exhibition log onto anmm.gov.au/india.

The Australian National Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour is open daily. Call 02 9298 3777 or log onto ANMM for more information.
