The approved $600m revitalisation plans for Great Keppel Island, which will include a marine precinct and state of the art marina, will be the first Great Barrier Reef resort to be certified by Green Globe, an international body promoting sustainable tourism practices.
Despite The Greens’ view that the 96-point Federal Government plan to minimise the environmental impact of the development 'doesn't go far enough', Federal tourism minister Martin Ferguson said the Tower Holdings development will be good for Queensland, tourism and responsible in the management of its environmental assets.
Approving the redevelopment last week, federal environment minister Tony Burke said it would be 'significantly different' from the plan the Federal Government rejected in 2009.

The revised development is 40% smaller, and the number of villas and marina berths halved, with 750 resort villas, 300 apartments, a 250-berth marina, hotel and 18-hole golf course, as well as an improved waste water management plan that ensured no discharge water would flow into the protected Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.
The golf course is likely to be relocated away from Leeke’s Lagoon to ensure larger buffers from migratory bird habitat and remove its visibility from the sea through retention of vegetation and establishment of screening vegetation.
