OKI 24-hr: Hat Trick for Wakatere Sailing Club in the OPT 6-HR Event

Fine conditions and a good breeze marked the beginning of the 2013 OKI 24-hour sailing race, with James Sandall in boat number 25 taking the lead after the first lap.

Olympian Susannah Pyatt, racing in the solo division, was in fourth place on the second lap and is set to race through the night with a 2pm finish on Sunday 10 March.

Devonport’s Wakatere Sailing Club’s Jonathan Nicholas and Henry Haslett won the OPTI 6-hr race, run prior to the start of the main event. The boys crossed the finish line ahead of two coming joint second, also both from Wakatere.

'It's a bit of a surprise to win,' said Haslett, 13. 'We took the lead early on and our strategy was to keep our heads out of the boat and stay on the breeze, which was a bit patchy in the morning.'

It's the fifth time the OPTI 6-hr race has been sailed, with most of the ex-winners now racing in the main event. Some have raced the main event for fourty years, while others are in the OPTI race for the first time as part of their Learn to Race courses.

The events are fundraisers for Murray’s Bay Sailing Club to develop youth sailing and local business Comworth, distributor for OKI fax and telecommunications products, has been sponsoring the race since 1989.
