In the Warren Jones International Youth Match Racing Regatta, at the end of the second round robin, the points table looked reasonably predictable. David Gilmour lost just one match on his way through the round robins, to finish four points clear of both Tristan Brown and Chris Steele.
The final five flights this morning were held in challenging conditions. An easterly breeze produced significant shifts and changes in pressure.
Tom Spithill (Pete’s Yacht Club, NSW) had a slender chance of progressing to the quarter finals if he could win all his races and South of Perth Yacht Club’s Luke Morrison was beaten in his, but though he managed to defeat both Sam Gilmour and Tristan Brown, it was not enough, so Spithill and Malaysia’s Hazim Dermawan missed out.
Predictably, Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club’s David Gilmour selected Luke Morrison as his opponent for the quarter finals, and despatched him from the competition with a three – nil result. Morrison and his crew were competing in just their second match racing regatta, facing a skipper who is currently ranked 25th on the World Match Racing Tour.
Both Morrison and Royal Perth Yacht Club skipper Steve Thomas came into this regatta with minimal experience and to their credit, performed very well in this company. Thomas put it into perspective this morning though: 'The good teams start to shine and the less experienced will find it harder. In saying that, we are less experienced but we’ve had some good results coming through and hopefully we can finish it off today.'
Thomas did not back away from that position, holding out an aggressive move by Sam Gilmour in the third quarter final match to win a penalty and the match, taking the pair to flight 4, which he then won by 14 seconds to force the decider. In a nailbiting fifth flight, Thomas kept his cool in some very tight mark roundings to snatch victory by a narrow margin.
Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club’s Tristan Brown sailed his quarter final against Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club’s Tim Coltman, and he too, settled the issue with a three – nil result.
Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron skipper, Chris Steele seemed set for victory over the CYCA’s Jay Griffin after two easy wins, but Griffin bounced back to take the third match by seven seconds and a close fourth flight by 13 seconds. In the fifth and deciding flight, Steele established a narrow lead and maintained it to the finish to progress to the semi finals tomorrow.
