Spectacular light show at Waves of Migration
|
The Australian National Maritime Museum’s iconic roofline, evoking sails and waves, will become the canvas this summer for a dynamic new projection show in celebration of the history of migration to Australia and intriguing stories of those who’ve come across the seas. Premiering on Australia Day, Waves of Migration is a thought-provoking eight-minute animated silent projection that weaves together Australia’s rich tapestry of migration stories. Waves of Migration follows the journeys of migrant boats, across oceans and cultures, through the passage of time. It depicts a fascinating array of personal stories from British convicts and early settlers, to Jewish refugees and displaced persons from war-torn Europe, to Ten Pound Poms, Vietnamese boat people and seaborne asylum seekers from Afghanistan. Together these waves of migration have made Australia the multi-cultural country it is today. The light show is supported by a dedicated website Waves of Migration Light Show 2013 with links to the Museum’s collection and a facility for people to share their immigration stories. Waves of Migration joins the museum’s 100-metre-long Welcome Wall and vast collection of more than 10,000 immigration artefacts, personal diaries, letters and photographs, as a lasting tribute to the millions of people who have emigrated from around the world to settle in Australia. The light show premieres on Australia Day, 26 January 2013, and runs nightly after dark until 17 Feburary 2013. Waves of migration is free, is suitable for all ages and is best viewed from Pyrmont Bridge and around the King Street Wharf area at Darling Harbour. Waves of Migration Light Show 2013
