The death of a woman in a boating mishap on Sydney Harbour has led police and authorities to warn about the dangers of drinking on boats during the party season.
The 49-year-old mother of four was celebrating with her husband and two of her children aboard a motor yacht on Sunday night when she went missing. Her body was found at a Rosebay jetty on Monday morning.
Police were told the woman had been drinking alcohol before she fell overboard. Detective Inspector Darren Schott said the tragedy was a reminder that 'boating and alcohol don't mix'.
The Homicide Squad is investigating as a matter of procedure and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
NSW Roads & Maritime campaign is urging boaties and their passengers to 'Go Easy on the Drink'
'Don’t go overboard with alcohol,' it reminds people. 'The blood alcohol limit on the water is the same as on the roads - 0.05% ... but be careful. The wind, waves and the sun combine to multiply the effects of alcohol. Your chances of disorientation and drowning are increased. This goes for everyone - the skipper, the passengers and the crew. Be aware, random breath testing applies to the operator of a boat in NSW.'
Each state and territory has similar laws. Take it easy this summer and all year round.
