Federal member for Kennedy, Queensland senator, Bob Katter delivered a press conference on The Spit on Monday 17 December 2012, launching a fervent campaign to stop the Broadwater Marine Project proposed by Premier Campbell Newman and Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate.
He said: 'We stand here to support Suzie Douglas and Keith Douglas who tenaciously oppose to a cruise ship
terminal going in the Broadwater.
'I feel, like every Australian who has lived or had a holiday on the Gold Coast, that while
they are here they feel like they own a little bit of the Gold Coast.
'The proposed Broadwater terminal will have to be dredged to a point that there will be no marine life anywhere. They (Tom Tate) are going to cut all the trees down and get rid of the marine life in the midst of their Broadwater development.
'Katter’s Australia Party will be moving legislation, led by Zander (Alexander) Douglas, to stop the Broadwater development from progressing.
'I can’t help but wonder why one would keep pushing for something that is so enormously unpopular and something that generated so much hostility within almost every group in society – from the super rich billionaires like Bob Ells down to humble people like me. You just have to ask yourself why they are pushing a land development project.
'The members of parliament down here are nothing more that cowardly rubber stamps. Three quarters of this area do not want the development to go ahead, but they will hold their hand up because their party told them to hold their hand up.
'As a political party, when you see a problem, you ask yourself if you should be involved. This is very significant issue for the tourism Mecca of Australia. As a leader of a federal party that is nationwide, it is our responsibility to come down here, speak to the people and stand up for their concerns.
'Mr Springborg announced that were would be no development in the Broadwater. He gave an official promise to the people of Queensland – a good promise that deserves to be kept.
'We are determined to see a cruise ship terminal go ahead. But we need it to be built in the
right location.'
