Sydney Short Ocean Racing Championship - Double win for Shogun V

In the Sydney Short Ocean Racing Championship, Rob Hanna’s TP52 Shogun V has shown superior speed in taking line honours in the time of four hours five minutes and 55 seconds, finishing at 14:05:55 this afternoon and scoring an overall win in Division 1, making it a double victory.

Overall, Shogun V beat second place getter, Nine Dragons, by a lengthy 12 minutes, with 2011 CYCA Blue Water Pointscore Series winner, Darryl Hodgkinson’s Beneteau 45, Victoire in third place.

Sailing in IRC Division 1 aboard Bob Cox’s DK46, Nine Dragons, MHYC Commodore John McCuaig commented: 'It was an absolutely sensational race. It was a lightish north-easterly breeze, at most 12 knots, after an overcast start this morning – it just got better from there.'

The Commodore said although Shogun was a little slow in getting off the starting blocks, it wasn’t long before Rob Hanna and his crew shot off not to be seen again. 'It was ideal for the TP52,' he said.

'We had a close race with the new Mc38, Ginger. We led them going to the Island, but we got a bit more pressure as we were rounding the mark, and she beat us round by about 50 metres,' Commodore McCuaig said of Leslie Green’s brand new boat.

'We only tacked once; off Avalon and straight-lined it the rest of the way, with the TP52 well in front of the rest of us. Coming home was a two-sail reach, so we went to a Code Zero, then when we got to Whale Beach we changed to an A1 and carried it home in 8-12 knots.

'It was a great race – there’ll be nobody come home and say they didn’t enjoy it,' the Commodore said.

In Division 2, it was a clash of the Beneteaus, as four finished in the top four places. Chris Bran’s Brannew, a Beneteau First 40 cruiser, claimed the honours from three Beneteau F40’s; CYCA Commodore, Howard Piggott, sailing his Beneteau F40, Flying Cloud into second from Philip Dash’s Justadash and Robbo Robertson’s Lunchtime Legend from Queensland.

Flying Cloud’s result gives her the lead of the Beneteau 40 Championship, going into tomorrow’s two races, which will decide the inaugural event.

Roger Hickman sailed his Farr 43, Wild Rose to first overall in Division 3 from Jack Stening’s Sydney 36, Stormaway, with Stephen Hatch’s Sydney 36cr, M, third overall.

In the PHS class, Arthur Psaltis and John Ross sailed their Hanse 430e Into the Mystic to a six minute win over Alan Husband’s Bavaria 43, Limelight, with and Steven Thomas’ Cookson 12, Blackadder in third.

Today’s race was sailed in conjunction with the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s Ocean Pointscore Series.

Thirty nine yachts in total started the race off Steele Point at Vaucluse at 10.00am this morning. The fleet sailed up the Harbour in a light southerly, before turning left for the Island off Pittwater, where competitors found the predicted north-easterly sea breeze waiting for them after starting in overcast conditions in a light southerly.

Many in the fleet are in pre-Rolex Sydney Hobart mode, where every race and every bit of practice not only helps, but gives each one a glimpse of the opposition ahead of the Boxing Day start.

Tonight, competitors, family and friends were kicking back to the Joyce Collins band in the Sandbar and enjoying a sausage sizzle while telling tales of the day’s exploits.

Tomorrow, the fleet will contest two races. The first is a short ocean race, its course to be dictated by wind direction. As soon as possible after that race, the 39 yachts will sail a speed a windward/leeward sprint, race in the vicinity of the Manly or Macquarie Circles, to be decided by conditions, and starting as soon as possible after the ocean race.

This is the last chance competitors will have to vie for the trophies and gift vouchers from Helly Hansen, a leading water sports and technical apparel supplier, and Sydney City Marine at Rozelle, one of the most accessible places to take large and small power and sailing boats for repairs, refits and antifouling.

An official presentation is scheduled for 5.00pm at MHYC on Sunday 25 November following racing.
