We are pleased to announce the official release of GBR Youth Challenge, campaigning for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup 2013. Our entry as an individual team is currently being assessed by the America’s Cup Race Management for a place at the trials during February in San Francisco. The team believe they have what it takes to compete the top level on San Francisco Bay, with the primary aim of bringing the cup home next year. The Youth America’s Cup represents the pinnacle of Youth sailing. The event shall be held in San Francisco at the beginning of September 2013, with trials running in February. Sailed in the AC45s, in a similar style to the America’s Cup World Series events the winner shall be decided over a series of fleet races. Competition shall be ruthless with close racing from the best youth sailors in the world. This is the first time the America’s Cup has opened up to youth sailing in such a big way and will provide young sailors a platform to develop their skills and experience. We believe it is essential that there is a British presence at this event. GBR Youth Challenge is made up of some of the best proven young sailors from Great Britain with a variety of different sailing backgrounds. All have competed at events of the very highest level including RC44 world championships, TP52 Medcup, Melges 32 circuit and F18 world championships. They have all come through the British Keelboat Academy at some point in their careers giving them not only access to top level coaching but also personal development training ashore. The sailing team is made up of, James French, Andrew Sinclair, Adam Lees, Tom Forrester-Coles, Trystan Seal and Peter Austin. The training regime is now under way. With the campaign currently based out of Cowes, Isle of Wight, we shall be training in the UK until the trials in San Francisco in February; building up our fitness for the physical AC45 boats and widening our experience of catamaran sailing. After February we plan to extend our training to an Extreme 40 or similar platform before flying out to San Francisco for a training camp before the event. The team’s website and social media platforms are now live and shall be updated as developments occur over the upcoming weeks. www.gbryouthac.com
