In the U.S. Multihull Championship, Sarah Newberry (Miami, Fla.) is on the verge of becoming the first woman skipper to ever win the Hobie Alter Trophy. Newberry and crew Kenny Pierce (Hialeah, Fla.) are undefeated this week on Santa Rosa Sound. They have won all thirteen races, including four on Saturday. The 2012 edition of the U.S. Multihull Championship is hosted by the Pensacola Beach Yacht Club. Newberry and Pierce have a 20-point lead over Sandra Tartaglino (Tiverton, R.I.) and crew Glenn Holmes (Pensacola, Fla.). Tartaglino and Holmes finished third in race 10, second in races 11 and 12, and fourth in race 13. They have a five-point lead over Eric Witte (Fairfield, Conn.) and Tyler Holmes (Panama City, Fla.). Friday’s cold temperatures parted ways for warmer conditions and sunny skies with breezes at 10 to 15 knots. Two more races are scheduled for Sunday in F16 Catamarans, beginning at 11:00 am CT. The forecast for Sunday predicts temperatures in the mid to high 60s and NE winds at 10 to 11 mph. Newberry, who is a frequent competitor at the U.S. Multihull Championship, finished sixth out of 19 teams last year. The last woman to win the U.S. Multihull Championship was Kathy Ward who crewed for Mike Montague in 2003. US Multihull Championship website
