Olympic Silver medallist Olivia Price, sailing her first Cherub regatta, triumphed over a competitive fleet in the Cherub Division of the Bethwaite Regatta sailed at Belmont 16ft Sailing Club over the weekend.
The series, sponsored by NB Sail Sports, attracted a Cherub fleet of 12 crews who saw it as an ideal lead-in regatta for the 50th Anniversary Nationals which are to be sailed at Belmont at Christmas.
In her first outing in a dinghy fleet race since the Olympics Price proved that consistency is the key to success in multiple short course racing. Sailing with Belmont’s Tom Drury in 'Remember the Tight Ends' Price took out the seven race series with just two race wins.
Saturday’s racing was contested in a fresh 15 to 18 knot south-easterly that had the lightweight Cherubs flying downwind. Always in the bunch at the front of the fleet, Price and Drury finished the four races on Saturday with no worse than third place to take the overnight lead from current Cherub National Champions Kris Fay and Morgan Frew in 'Wally'. Close behind were Kirk Mitchell and Andrew Stephenson in 'Harden Up' who would have been closer in the pointscore but for a broken tiller that caused them a DNF in Race 3.
In the final three races of the series, sailed in 12 to 15 knots on Sunday, Price and Drury again managed a win and a second before dropping to their worst place of fifth in the final heat when they had the series won.
The Lancaster brothers Ryan and Brett sailing 'Causin’ HaaviK' sealed second overall in the series with a good win in the final heat by chasing the pressure out to the left of the course on the final run while the series leaders were following each other to the right. Their final score, featuring no race worse than third saw them within a few points of the winners. Mitchell and Stephenson who showed great speed in the new Cherub that they built over the winter finished third.
