Powerhouse Discovery Centre Ships and Boats Open Day Sat 10 November

'Model of a paddle steamer. Powerhouse Collection.'    unknown unknown

Ships ahoy! Join us for an open day that delves into the history of ship building, the science of steam and life and death on the high seas! Our program includes informative behind-the-scenes tours to view a selection of rare ship models (see tour details below), a demonstration showing the intricacies of model ship making by Gary Renshaw and talks on the SS Orsova and the Triple Expansion Steam Engine.

We are excited to be hosting a fascinating lecture on the sinking of the RMS Titanic by UNSW Senior Lecturer, Sarah Gregson, and international best-selling author, Kathryn Fox, gives an insight into researching disappearances on cruise liners for her latest crime fiction novel, Cold Grave. Our younger visitors will enjoy learning about nautical knots and getting crafty with our popular marine-themed make-and-do activities.

Participants will also have the opportunity to take a sneak peek at the restoration work currently being undertaken on the steel hulled yacht, Ice Bird, and learn about the exciting story of adventurer and Australian explorer, Dr. David Lewis, who purchased Ice Bird in 1972 for his heroic voyage to Antarctica.
