Close racing at the Hamble Autumn Championships
|
Shifty conditions off Hill Head provided an excellent weekend of sailing over the 13th-14th October for the first seven races of the 2012 Hamble Autumn Championships. A strong fleet of fourteen SB20s raced nose to tail throughout the weekend, with current World Champion Geoff Carveth dominating the top position on the first day by sailing fast and nailing every shift around the track. He got a strong challenge from Tim Newton’s team in Polarbear and also Charles Sheppard in Sharc, showing his consistent pace with two thirds and a second on his score-line for the day. Henri Lloyd / Forelle Estates struggled with the shifty conditions on Saturday, not having sailed since their second place at the Nationals in June, but they came out fighting on Sunday, landing two first‘s and a second to secure second place overall to Carveth by five points at the end of the weekend. Niall Peelo in 3-Some raced consistently well across both days to take third for the weekend. Ian Hudson’s team in Slinky sailed a blinder in the middle race on Sunday to take a clear win, following an excellent tactical call to find breeze on the far right hand side of the final run. As ever, Hamble River Sailing Club has provided excellent race management and courses that saw everyone in the fleet fighting for each place. SB20s continue to provide the best in one design tactical racing and if you’re tempted to get involved in a final outing for the year, the next weekend of 27th/28th October promises to be a big one, with the class winter party hosted in Hamble on Saturday evening.
