The NCYC Etchells Offshore regatta was sailed off Newcastle over the Labor Day long weekend. Matt Chew skippering Gen XY from RQYS sailed an impressive regatta to win convincingly from Viken from RSYS and Tango from RBYC resulting in podium place representation by three different states.
PRO Phil Collyer abandoned racing on day one of the regatta with strong and gusty Norwesterly winds of up to 35 knots plaguing the race course off Newcastle. Luckily days two and three saw more benign weather conditions with predominantly eight to 14 knot Sou-Easterlies making for some tight racing and allowing for an eight race series to be achieved.
Albeit competitor numbers were lower than expected, representation from a variety of clubs as well as Kiwi representation made for an interesting event with the regatta being considered a success. As usual the berthing and crane facilities and hospitality displayed by NCYC to visiting interstate and overseas sailors was also welcomed and helped make for a successful regatta which will be held again next year.
