Youth Match Racing Championship - Perfect conditions on Day 1

After the Australian Youth Match Racing Championship first day of racing yesterday, on Hobart’s River Derwent, Tasmanian sailor Christopher ('George') Jones and New South Wales champion Byron White are tied on points.

Each skipper and his crew won seven of their eight races as the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania completed two round-robins in what international race officer Nick Hutton described as 'perfect' sailing conditions for match racing.

In their two encounters Jones and his crew of John Cooper, Dylan Gore and Hugh Jones from the RYCT won the first, while White and his crew of Ashlen Rooklyn and Jack Breislin from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia took out the second.

Jones is sailing four-up within the weight limit while the CYCA crew is just three, as are the other teams.

'Each crew sailed eight match races today in a light 8-10 knots east-south-easterly breeze,' Hutton said. 'We saw a high standard of match racing in the Elliott 6 dinghies and some very close encounters in the early races.'

The only girl skipper in the Yachting Australia event, Millie Bennett and her crew of Alice Tarnawski and Jack Nairn from NSW’s Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, are lying third overall, followed by Tim Forbes-Smith from the CYCA and Zac Pullen from the RYCT.
