Australian Youth Match Racing Championship – Five teams line up

Yachting Australia’s 2012 Australian Youth Match Racing Championship gets underway on Saturday 22nd September. Five teams will line up tomorrow, three from New South Wales and two from Tasmania. The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania will host the championship, providing its fleet of Elliott 5.7 for the series over the next four days that will comprise multiple round robin racing followed by finals. Tasmania has drawn on some of the State’s best Laser sailors for its teams representing the RYCT while two of the New South Wales teams come from the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s Youth Sailing Academy. The third NSW team will represent the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club. In the RYCT crews, Zac Pullen will lead a crew of Jack McCullum and Oisim Asmal, while Chris (‘George’) Jones has elected for an extra crew member with his crew comprising Dylan Gore, Hugh Jones and youthful Jonny Cooper. For the national championship, NSW youth match racing champion Ashlen Rooklyn has handed over the helm to crew member Byron White and instead with trim the main, with Jack Breislin on the bow. The second CYCA team will be skippered by Tim Forbes-Smith, who lost a close final to Rooklyn in the NSW youth match racing championship. His crew will be Jack Dawson and Daniel Caine. Representing the RPAYC will be Milly Bennett, Alice Tarnaski and Jack Nairn. The racing has been scheduled during the school holiday period and will be followed by the Australian open match racing and Australian women’s open match racing championships to be held at Sandringham Yacht Club from 27-30 September, giving youth competitors the chance to further develop their skills against the best in Australia.
