Rainy Day 2 at J24 Worlds

Racing for day two of the J24 Worlds had a grey start. Boats headed out to the start under consistent light rain and winds steadily building. With a promise for heavy winds and a storm coming in, the race committee was eager to get two races with a slight possibility for a third.

The third race of the series was set for winds out of the southeast at about 8-10 knots. Winds continued to lighten throughout the race to four knots, leading to lots of protests and plenty of boats taking penalties.

The fourth race did not start quite as smoothly, as we were plagued with wind shifts and a few small errors from our otherwise outstanding race committee. After several AP’s, general recalls and an abandoned race, the boats were off. Winds steadily built as a storm approached from land. After most boats had rounded the final leeward mark the storm finally hit with winds upwards of 20 knots with gusts to 30 knots. We saw one blown spinnaker and another boat broached, some boats finished the last upwind with their genoas down.

All in all, racing was good. Everyone was a little wet but thank goodness we were met onshore with free beer provided by Coors Light. No free dinner tonight but I’m sure most of the racers are going to spend the night trying to dry up.

Preliminary results have been posted. Bruschetta is still in first, driver Mauricio Santa Cruz receiving a ninth and first place finish. Top Canadian boats placed 16th, 17th and 18th with Clean Air’s Rossi Milev capturing second in the last race of the day.

Sail-World signing off.

Keep Sailing!!!!
