MOD70 European Tour - Repeated success for Musandam-Oman Sail

In the MOD70 European Tour, light winds limited the planned itinerary of the Cascais City Race series heats to just the one single race today in Portugal. After winning the final race on Friday to lead the inshore race series overall, Sidney Gavignet’s crew on Musandam-Oman Sail today repeated their success to extend their overall lead in the Cascais City Race Series to three points ahead of Spindrift racing.

Sidney Gavignet's international team were not the best starters but were the only crew to gybe-set at the first turning mark. In the light W’ly breeze on the downwind leg this took them closer to the Cascais-Estoril shore where they found a measure of extra wind and a nice angle to the leeward gate.

By the leeward turn they had built a small lead over Foncia who had made their best start yet in Cascais. Around the two laps of the standard triangle course Foncia compressed into the leaders very slightly as they approached the finish, but the winner’s gun was for Musandam -Oman Sail. Spindrift racing took third, holding off a spirited challenge from Groupe Edmond de Rothschild who flew their gennaker and sailed lower but further to get in contact with Yann Guichard's crew but they had to settle for fourth behind Spindrift racing.

As the breeze dies away from the race’s 6-9kts average three Speed Match races were sailed in succession. Groupe Edmond de Rothschild won the first two out and back reaching races, while Yann Guichard’s Spindrift racing won the third.

Light winds are forecast to continue into Sunday.
