Inner Spring Regatta - Summer into play on day 2

There is good reason as to why the Hunter is endearingly referred to as 'God’s Country' and the weather gods certainly upheld that prophecy on the second and final day of the Forgacs Defence Inner Spring Regatta hosted by Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club.
The Farr 40 fleet were first to leave the dock on a crisp spring morning for a 9am warning signal for a single offshore windward leeward race. With clear skies and a nine knot westerly blowing RO Ted Anderson took the fleet left at the harbour entrance and set up a course off Stockton Beach. With the top laid only a couple of hundred metres of the beach and the offshore land breeze holding up the breaking waves there was no better place to be than Farr 40 sailing.
The fleet were sent on a three lap windward leeward course with Estate Master leading at the top mark closely followed by Enigma. The breeze held in for the next two legs but begun to fade as the yacht reached the top mark for the second time and also shifted left resulting in the course being shortened. The five race series was won by Enigma with Estate Master and Forty taking the minor placings. The shortened course allowed ample time for the Farr 40’s to return to the harbour stop and buy fish and chips and be ready to start the final double points IRC and PHS longer offshore race.
With all yachts in the harbour the fleet of 19 yachts were sent on a course taking them North into Stockton Bight before rounding a fixed mark and completing a four mile beat to windward before sliding downwind to the same fixed mark and returning to the harbour for a finish. By the time the two race divisions and one cruising division got away the breeze had settled in from the south at 10 knots resulting in great sailing conditions on rolling swell but flat seas. First home was TP52 Frantic however the McConaghy 38 The Cone of Silence was not far behind. Then to finish was the pack of Farr 40’s with Corby 43 Anger Management also in the mix. Quest enjoyed the waterline length racing to round out Division 1.
In Division 2 the Archambault M34 Concealed Weapon savoured the conditions winning easily from RP36 Spirit.
The PHS Series was won by Frantic and Aurora in divisions 1 and 2, respectively, with Anger Management and Spirit winning their respective divisions on IRC. The cruising division was won by local NCYC member Robyn Hillery’s Hereshoff 29, Warrain.
A beautiful spring day on the water was concluded with presentation of trophies in the club including some amazing industrial style trophies manufactured by Forgacs Shipping which will become perpetual trophies for the regatta which will definitely be held about the same time next year.
