Northern NSW Sabot Sailing Association Invite young people in the reign to join our association for a fantastic summer season of sailing. Membership is free! You don’t need your own boat!

Most clubs that sail Sabots have boats available to members (new and existing), these club boats are built to the same rule and are allowed to be sailed and raced in all Sabot events right up to the nationals. It is even rumoured that Gold medallist Nathan Outteridge’s sabot is now a club boat on Lake Macquarie and regularly gets taken out racing by junior members.

If you do choose to own your own boat then a Sabot class of boat is not as costly as you may think; an old woody goes from as little as $100 but would need some handy work to get it up to speed, a good professional built second hand fibreglass boat can be had from $1,500 and some very good boats have changed hands from around $3,500. These are second hand boats that come with all the extras you would otherwise need to buy on a new boat; extra sails for training, covers, cradles and sometimes even spare foils and spars are included in the deal.

Sabots are sailed in two divisions. The two up division is for sailors up to twelve years old. There is one crew on the helm and the other on the main sheet; there are no jibs, spinnakers or trapeze to learn so the introduction to sailing can be a more relaxed, fun way to introduce the younger ones into the sport of sailing. The one up division is for sailors from eleven to sixteen years old. Although it should be mentioned that most move on to youth class boats at around fourteen years of age.

WhyKnot Sail A Sabot at a fundraiser BBQ -  Paul Summerell

We have a packed program this year with a Zone championship series that kicks off on September 15th at Toronto sailing club with a number of heats to be contested at Toronto, Wangi, Sunshine and Gosford throughout the season. We are also hosting the NSW Championships over two weekends at Toronto and Gosford. A good number of boats travel from the Southern NSW region, Victoria and Queensland to attend the regatta. We have two training weekends planned for this season with our coach Jessica Hansen. National match racing champion is among Jessica’s recent achievements, but we like her most because of her ability to bring our group of juniors together as a team and show them how much fun it can be to sail.

Jessica will also accompany the Northern Zone team to the Sabot Nationals to be held at Royal Brighton Yacht club in Victoria from December 28th to Jan 5th. The Sabot Nationals incorporates Sabot week for all the juniors that are not yet ready to tackle the national regatta. Sabot week is a fun week of sailing, often held closer to shore so as all the Mums and Dads get to cheer the sailors on. Our program wraps up for the year with a fun Sabot camp held at Wangi club where the sailors enjoy two days of relaxed training and a sleepover in the clubhouse.

So if you are interested in sailing a junior class this season, WhyKnot sail a Sabot?
