Flying Fifteen European Championships 2012 are on the third day of racing at Fraglia Vela Riva, Trentino Garda. This double is popular in only a few countries with its racing philosophy bucking today's trend by having long regattas lasting at least an hour so that they can enjoy sailing windward, keeping in a compact fleet.
It's lovely to see all the boats from six different countries berthed in the semi-circular harbour at Fraglia Vela Riva. 35 crews are participating with Great Britain having the largest number of entrants. Ireland, France, Spain, Australia and Belgium are also taking part. This is an opportunity for Fraglia Vela Riva to host a 'tourist' event since this class is not particularly well-known in Italy.
Participants can combine their races with a holiday where they, and their families, can enjoy a host of activities this area has to offer including mountain-biking, going for walks and climbing.
The Championship ends on Friday, August 31st. After six races all with good winds of 14-16 knots, the British crew of Greg Wells and Richard Rigg of Hayling Island Sailing Club have taken the lead, five points ahead of fellow Brits Steve Goacher and Phil Evans (Royal Windermere Yacht Club). John Lavery and David O'Brien of Ireland had been in the lead on the first two days but dropped into third place after a disappointing 11th and 12th today. They are tied on points with Bax-Childs of Great Britain.
