The Brewin Dolphin Dragon Gold Cup 2012 is being hosted by the Kinsale Yacht Club, Co Cork, Ireland, from 8th to 14th September. The Dragon Gold Cup is considered the open World Cup of Dragon Sailing with a high calibre of interest from all over the world.

Already, over 60 boats have entered from Japan, Hong Kong, Russia, Ukraine, Sweden, Germany, Finland, France, Portugal, Denmark and Monaco as well as strong fleets from Ireland and the UK. Up to 70 boats with crews that include multiple World Champions and past Olympians are expected in Kinsale.

Some of the top sailors registered to date include Lawrie Smith, Markus Wieser, Poul Richard Hoj-Jensen, Tommy Mueller and Vincent Hoesch - all well known international sailors with many world-class titles between them.

Lawrie Smith, together with Ossie Stewart and Tim Tavinor are the current Dragon World Champions. A British Olympic Bronze Medallist in the Soling in 1992, Lawrie Smith is well known for four Whitbread Round the World Races, and numerous America's Cup and Admiral's Cup campaigns.

Markus Wieser is the current Dragon Gold Cup holder and has won the Dragon Europeans three times. He also sailed professionally on the RC44, TP52 and Melges 24 circuits and is an ex Flying Dutchman sailor.

Poul Richard Hoj-Jensen is a double Olympic Gold Medallist in 1976 and 1980, has won five Dragon Gold Cups, four European and three World Championships as well as winning several world championships in other classes. He is the current Irish National Dragon Champion.

Tommy Mueller and Vincent Hoesch together won the Dragon World Championships in Dublin in 2007. Vincent has won seven world championships in the Dragon, Star and H Boat, nine Dragon European Championships and six Gold Cups.

Also competing are Joergen Schoenherr, winner of three Dragon Gold Cups; Lars Hendriksen, winner of two Dragon Gold Cups and two European Dragon Championships and former British Olympian and America's Cup sailor Andy Beasworth who will be joining Klaus Diedreichs.

The Irish Dragon Fleet will be well represented by Edinburgh Cup winner, Simon Brien as well as established campaigners Martin Byrne, Don O'Donoghe, Andrew Craig and Cameron Good.

The race management team will be headed up by Alan Crosbie and the International Jury and measurement team have been appointed.

'We are delighted to host the prestigious Dragon Gold Cup at Kinsale Yacht Club this season and look forward to welcoming a world-class fleet to Kinsale for a full racing and social progamme,' said Cameron Good, Commodore, Kinsale Yacht Club.

'We are grateful to private client investment managers, Brewin Dolphin, title sponsors of the Dragon Gold Cup, official product partner Dubarry and for the support of the Irish Sailing Association, Failte Ireland, Irish Distillers, Latitude Kinsale, Giles Norman Gallery and Kinsale Town Council,' he added.

The Irish Dragon South Coast Championships are taking place on first and 2nd September, to serve as a 'warm up' event for the Gold Cup. Entries are still open for both events.
