Sail-World.com : Sailor overboard swept out to sea
Sailor overboard swept out to sea

'Hornsea to the rescue'    .
Just because your sailing boat is in shallow water does not mean you are necessarily safe if you fall from the deck. A British sailor this week came close to losing his life when he slipped and fell from the deck of his yacht just metres from the shore.

Craig Adams was doing maintenance on his yacht with his dog when the incident happened. Within seconds a strong current swept him off shore away from his boat and was a mile away before he was rescued suffering from hypothermia. The fact that he was, sensibly, wearing a life jacket served to keep him afloat.

The 54-year-old told local publication 'This is Hull and East Riding', ' I could easily have become another seaside statistic.'

Three volunteer members of Hornsea Inshore Rescue, based on the seafront, were paged and raced to the scene.

Coxswain Sue Hickson-Marsay was first to reach Mr Adamson, who was suffering the early effects of hypothermia.

She dragged Mr Adamson onto a rescue jetski and took him to shore, where paramedics were waiting for them.

Mr Adamson, who had been wearing a life vest, says he attempted to climb back onboard after falling into the water.

But the yacht was too high to reach.

'I was really starting to panic when I started to be swept out to sea,' he said.

'I must have been a good mile-and-a-half out when I was eventually picked up.'
