The Australian Marine Alliance (AMA) today formally announced its Queensland board to develop a
sophisticated and coordinated national policy position on all marine and fishing related issues whilst bringing
together the recreational and professional fishing sectors for the first time.
Chief Executive of the AMA Dean Logan commented, 'This really is a historic partnership and the sign of a new way of advocacy for our respective sectors. The board consists of the following people:
• Rob Pender – Rob has managed cattle properties and aerial mustered cattle in northern Australia as a helicopter pilot for many years and has been a professional fisherman for over 12 years in the Gulf of Carpentaria based in Karumba. Rob is a current board member of both the Inshore Seafood Council of Queensland and the Queensland Seafood Industry Association.
• Dan Hudson – Dan is a net fisherman with over 25 years experience throughout Queensland and Northern Australia, and has also worked in the east coast line fishery as well as the commercial charter sector on the east coast.
• Alan Hobbs – Alan is a first generation fisherman in the Queensland net inshore and line fishery. Alan also fishes for shark, mackerel and barramundi and is committed to working with the recreational sector to develop resource allocation policy that is balanced and fair and that protects the marine environment.
• Don Jones – Don is currently the Chief Executive of Queensland’s largest peak recreational boating and light marine bodies Marine Queensland, representing over 400 companies across the state. Don has developed policy for the recreational, boating, light marine, manufacturing and allied sectors and believes the only way forward is to continue to bridge the gap between the professional and recreational fishing sectors.
• Greg Haines – Greg is currently the National Sales and Marketing Manager of Maritimo Offshore and has been a keen Queensland recreational angler for over 40 years. Greg has an unparalleled understanding of the issues affecting recreational fishing in Australia and will represent anglers interests exceptionally well.
Dean Logan commented, 'This announcement compliments our board in South Australia that has both recreational and professional fisherman sitting down in a formal capacity to discuss resource allocation, industry development and environmental policy.'
Rob Pender agreed, 'This is a very positive step for professional fishers in Queensland as it gives us a national platform to place a strong case for industry development. Contrary to the views of Canberra, a large majority of professional fishers want to stay fishing and want to work with the amateur sector. The AMA provides us with the strongest possible foundation to deliver programs and policies that provide a future for professional fishers and a platform to deliver sustained food security and environmental policy outcomes.'
Don Jones also agreed, 'The beauty of this Board is that together we will deliver far greater environmental benefits than the environmental NGO’s even seek themselves. Frankly, we should be effectively managing 100% of the marine environment - not arbitrarily closing areas for political currency – and embracing the community and industry to help in the process,' concluded Mr Jones.
