Cork Olympic Class Regatta - Great racing on day 2

'Cork Olympic Class Regatta 2012'    Cork 2012

On day two of the Cork Olympic Class Regatta, it was another day of sun and windy conditions with great racing in Kingston. All of the fleets had a good day yesterday and are racing hard today with the radials on the stadium course, right off the breakwater.

On the double handed boat courses, most of the fleets got four races in yesterday. On the 49er course, Jon Lahda and Daniel Inkpen from the Canadian Sailing team head into the day in first, with 11 points. Just behind them are David Morrie and Justin Barnes. Gordon Cook, one of the Canadian Olympians and his crew, Marc Farmer, are sitting in third. On the same course it is very exciting to see our first 49er FX, sailed by Laura Borden and her crew Laurie Bennett.

This is the new women’s skiff boat and will be seen in the Olympics in 2016. It is the first time we are seeing it here at CORK. On the 29er course sitting in first are Gustin and Woodbury, in second Scott and Ross and in third Morgan and Myatt. This fleet is in its qualifying series, and the gold and silver fleets will be determined after Monday’s racing. On the International 14 course we have Leigh and Squeegee leading, McGhan and Matthew following and Lemieux and Graeme sitting in third.

Yesterday, on the single handed courses, fleets were able to complete three races. On the Finn course, for the North American Championship, the World youth champ Martin Robitaille was in first, followed by Gordon Lamphere and Darrell Peck. On the Laser course Kingston’s own Robert Davis is leading the charge, followed by Joaa Hackerott from Brazil and Allan Clark in third.

In the Laser Radial open class, Luke Ramsay, one of the 470 Olympians is in first with Kingston’s Hugh Macrae in second and Sandy Beatty in third. In the Women’s Radial fleet we have Natalia Montemayor, of Mexico, Ingrid Merry and Brenda Bowskill from the Canadian National Sailing team, in first, second and third, respectfully. The Kites, sailing from the water filtration plant, saw Andy Wong in the lead with Christopher Butzen and Jessica Sickinger in second and third.

Tomorrow will be the last day for the Kites and the International 14’s. The 29er fleet will be racing on the stadium course. The rest of the fleets still have three more days to go.
