Canadian report from the Yellow Sea Race

Captain Mike Evans is reporting from the Yellow Sea Race currently taking place in Korea and China. The sailors representing Canada were paired with Americans Gerry Tullo and Dan Liberty on Edeler Stern, a local Etap 34 and slowest yacht in the fleet. The event consists of three legs between Korea and China, with some in-port racing in between. Unfortunately, the logistical issues have prevented the finish times from the first in-port race in Incheon to be properly recorded, so only 'placing' will be shown.
Mike reports via text messages as Internet is currently not accessible and comments: 'Edeler Stern finished fifth in the first offshore race from Incheon to Weihai, China, which isn’t bad considering we lost our steering halfway across the Yellow Sea in 15-20 knots of breeze on a fast reach at night. The boat spun out of control as one would expect but we eventually got everything under control, repaired the steering box and got back under way an hour later. I was happy to finish the race safely even though we only managed a fifth!
The Weihai inshore race was great. Sunny, warm, with good breeze. The Etap 34 is not very competitive in windward/leeward race against all the other sport boats, but we managed to get a third regardless. The Weihai-Qingdao offshore starts today and we're hoping for podium finish. The crew is dialed up and we're ready to go!'

Racing in the Yellow Sea is full of navigational challenges with gates and excluded areas to contend with and definitely keeps the crew on their toes; this includes watching other competitors to ensure they follow the rules and don’t try to take a short cut on the race course.
