On the 51st Cal 20 Class Championship, hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club, second day a close look at the local weather forecast showed light breeze in the morning building to 11-12 knots by 1 o’clock.
Well, it was about 3:30 p.m. when the typical Long Beach southwesterly finally kicked in at about 10 knots bringing a welcome relief to the 28 Cal 20s who had endured two postponements while the fickle wind died to 3 knots prior to the start of the first and second race.
The race committee empathized with the sailors, trying to give them something to race in and worked hard to get as many of the four scheduled races for the day in the bag. Three were completed which leave four to run tomorrow.
The Championship, Consolation and Bronze Series skippers adjusted well and a few rose to the top of the order showing their adaptability.
In the Championship Series, Mark and Bruce Golison, ABYC, ended the day in first place with a six point lead over second place Mike Van Dyke, ABYC/LBYC.
'Our plan on the day was for us to co-skipper the boat,' Mark Golison said. 'I skippered the first race and we won. So we decided not to change anything. Then we won the second race and I stayed at the helm. Because of the shifting conditions we were playing by ear most of the day.'
Bruce added, 'We had to do a 360 [degree penalty turn] at the start of the second race but then had to a 720 in the third race which really hurt us.'
'You take every chance you can,' Mark said.
Van Dyke gave full credit to his crew, Mike Pentacost, for giving them their second place spot going in the third and final day Sunday.
'Mike is a tremendous sailor,' Van Dyke said. 'We looked at the forecast and saw the light air, so we planned to go light today sailing with just the two of us instead of some who sail with three. In lighter air the extra weight can hurt you.
'In the first race we were run out at the line but finally found our lane and ended up finishing second.
'Mike and I have sailed for many years together, sailing several Transpacs and even to Tahiti. He’s one of the best sailors I know.
'Our plans for tomorrow are to do the same things we did today and see how it works out.'
Sunday’s racing action begins again at 12 noon with four races scheduled for both the Championship and Consolation Series and two more races scheduled for the Bronze Series.
Current wind predictions for Sunday show strong, consistent breeze all day tomorrow… but we shall see.
