51st Cal 20 Class Championship day 1

Friday was the first day of the 51st Cal 20 Class Championship hosted by Long Beach Yacht Club.

A three race round robin decided which of the 24 boats would race in the Championship Series and which would race in the Consolation Series, beginning Saturday and concluding Sunday.


Stuart (Stu) Robertson, ABYC, topped the fleet by posting a first-place finish in all three races on a warm day that saw only 8-10 knots of breeze.

Some said his performance squarely put the target on his back for the start of tomorrow’s Championship racing action. With a competitive fleet made up of past class champions and local Cal 20 up-and-comers one asks what set him apart in today’s races. 'The difference is my crew, Paul Anctil and Mark Ryan,' Robertson said. 'Paul continued to tune the rig throughout each race and Mark gave me a perspective and info on the course and where the other boats were. All of that information was the difference.'

A last-minute entry into the regatta was LBYC match racer Dustin Durant. Durant never finished worse than third on the day and showed great promise for the series. The amazing thing is that he has had very little experience on Cal 20s… very little. 'Today was my first time in a Cal 20,' Durant confesses with a smile.

'On the way out to the race course we watched the other boats and duplicated their technique,' Durant said. 'You know, these sail a lot like a Naples Sabot. It’s amazing how similar the two boats are.'

He credits his crew, Phil Toth, with their outstanding performance today but will have Shane Young (a regular match racing crew member) with him tomorrow. Looking to repeat last year’s win, Keith Ives made the cut with a fourth overall in today’s standings but looks to dial it up a bit tomorrow. 'We just need to get off the start line better,' Ives said. 'We were conservative today, but we won’t be tomorrow. We’ve got to be a little more aggressive and have a new target to go after… Stu.'

Tomorrows racing action begins at 12 noon with four races scheduled for both the Championship and Consolation Series and two races scheduled for the Bronze Series. The Bronze Series fleet is made up of boats that want to compete as part of the overall Cal 20 Class Championship regatta but do not contend for the Class Championship. They have four races scheduled over Saturday and Sunday.
