'Yukie Yokoyama Optimist World Champion 2012'    Matias Capizzano
After leading for most of the Optimist World Championship, Yukie Yokoyama won the title today, ahead of her team mate Samuel Neo Jiun Jie. After yesterday's results, they were separated by just one point and today, they were sailing in different divisions so they both knew that they needed to win each race to have a chance of becoming champion. Despite this pressure, neither of them faltered, both scoring two first places, enough for Yukie to become champion and Samuel to take silver.

Jessica Goh (Singapore) finished in third place and Bart Lambriex (Netherlands) had a good racing day and moved up to fourth place leaving Jiayi Loh (Singapore) in fifth.

The entire regatta was sailed in an average wind of 8-9 knots with an absolute maximum of 12 knots. This proved a winning formula for the lightest sailors, none more dominant than Singapore. The heavier New Zealand team acquitted themselves well in these light conditions but were always disadvantaged by their extra weight. Congratulations to the team and their coach Chris Steele on their achievement.

Final results for the New Zealand team are:

26th Tim Adair (NZL 4429) 26th
34th William McKenzie (NZL 4413)
52nd Isaac McHardie (NZL4374)
72nd Leonard Takahashi-Fry
90th Cameron Moss

Based on the best four sailor’s results, New Zealand came seventh in the Nations Cup. The New Zealand team also placed ninth in the Worlds Teams Racing Championship.
