On Tuesday 17th July Alex set off from New York to attempt to break the West to East transatlantic single handed record which has stood at 10 days, 55 minutes and 19 seconds for 10 years.
This morning Alex has just 110Nm to go!!!
Alex’s report from the boat this morning:'ETA could be as early as 1700BST today. The light wind patch proved to be smaller than forecast and now the wind is more in the north, so I am currently tight reaching. Wind could easily go back to the Northeast but I can see the live data at the Scilly Isles which are only six hours away and I am hopeful the breeze will just increase. Lots of shipping and fishing boats around to keep me worried and awake.
'It would be really nice if I could finish before 1909 GMT and bring the record into the single digits, that’s what I am pushing for now.
'First sunrise this morning for many days, in fact first sun for many days and I am looking forward to the finish.'
Yesterday he wrote:
'Frustrating 24 hours on board HUGO BOSS, but the record is in sight!
'330Nm to go which means in the last 24 hours I have only gained 120Nm towards the mark. Very unhealthy compared to the 400+ miles in every single 24 hour period before then! Ironically the front that I stayed ahead of for the last week was going to cause very light winds in my path to the finish so I had to cross to the west s...ide of and tack upwind and get into a favourable position west of the finish. I will suffer very light winds later tonight west of the Scilly Isles but hopefully it wont be too painful.
The good news is that my estimated finish time according to the routing is 1830 GMT tomorrow, thats still 24.5 hours ahead of the routing and I am uber confident of breaking this record, its just by how much now. Normally I would expect the routing to be optimistic so if I had to bet money I would be guessing between 0000 and 0300 GMT on Friday morning
Very gusty conditions overnight with the boat requiring almost constant attention but winds seem more stable now. I could do with some good sleep today as approaching the coast always requires more vigilance with lots of shipping and fishing boats around.'
Update: As at his latest report @ 11:30 BST Higo Boss had 65 nautical miles to go to the finish.
