The Aussies were on fire during day one of the 2012 29er World Championship in Travemunde, Germany.
With a record number of 218 crews representing 24 nations, the biggest ever 29er worlds event, the committee divided the fleet into four groups yellow, red, blue and green over two courses.
The weather presented an idyllic summer's day of sparkling sunshine and gentle breezes from 11knots at 1300hrs softening throughout the day resulting in a lengthy seven hours of competition with the last fleets returning to the beach at 8:30pm, the green fleet yet to complete their third race.
The competition at this regatta is historically second to none with past 29er World Champions from 2007 up to the present all back for another shot at the 2012 world title. The 11 aussie crews here to represent their country of which there are nine youth crews held up the flag in honourable fashion with race bullets scored by youths AUS 1929 Tom Siganto, Joel Turner and AUS 2067 Felix Grech, Cam Gundy in the blue fleet, AUS 2094 Ella Giudice, Courtney Higgins in the red fleet, and AUS 1874 Alison Chapman, Rhys Mara in the green fleet.
Australian skipper Harry Price in his first international regatta after three races is placed nicely one point behind current the world champions ARG 1 Victoria Travascio, Franco Greggi . In commenting to 9er Executive Director Jerelyn Biehl, he wasn’t very nervous but when asked about the conditions, it’s 'sort of our stuff, a bit tricky and light,' Harry said. Harry’s plan for the remainder of the week? 'Just continue to get some good results, get some experience and have a bit of fun.'
The Aussies have positioned themselves well after three races leading into day 2 of the regatta. Presently we are placing second in the blue fleet with AUS 1929 Tom Siganto, Joel Turner on 13.50pts, fourth in the yellow fleet with AUS 1407 Harry Price, Nathan Edwards on 14pts, third in the red fleet with AUS 2094 Ella Giudice, Courtney Higgins on 16pts. Running second in the green fleet after two races are AUS 1874 Alison Chapman, Rhys Mara on 12pts with their third race first up on the agenda this morning before the reassignment of the fleets and an anticipated four more races.
