I remember a Fireball event at Hayling in the eighties when Chichester Harbour was having some sort of issue. A song struck up in the bar "I'm riding along on the crest of a wave when a t**d flew past my ear..." and on it went....
And the area of Poole Harbour that exited from the town quay was fondly known as Pooh Corner amongst some of our club members. ...and we survived to tell the tale! |

One of the first things I taught my kids:
Don't capsize near a mark called 'Sewer'

Had my first sea water induced gastro enteritus bout this year last week after a particularly windy session in an L3k every time I went to speak i got a mouth full and eventually some went down, that night up all night, why? because it had been raining a lot a few days before and when it rains Southern Water use the short sea outfall just off our club.
A week or two prior to that it was a really sunny day offshore wind, flat blue sky blue sea except for this brown satin oozing up a couple of t yards out and upwind in a SW of our place, it really is disgusting that now in this day and age this still goes on. Particularly when i get a water bill for 115% of my actual water received bill for sewage disposal and their profits and the money they pay their chief executive, it makes you want to go and deliver some of their product to his desk. I don't find this issue that funny. Sooner or later, a large proportion of us will succumb to the viruses and bacteria in the sea even if we sail inland. It could be some dodgy shellfish at a posh restaurant or a child playing in a rock pool at the seaside. I am pretty sure my family has been affected in the past. And while most people only suffer tummy upsets some succumb to serious, life changing illnesses.
Irrespective of political persuasion my view of politicians is that they are focussed solely on being re-elected. So their decisions on what to spend money on are arrived at after calculating the ratio of finances committed to additional votes won. In this case it appears that there are more profitable bandwagons to jump on.

Agreed, caveman. My worst bout was back in the early 90s, so bad the doc had to come out in the night and give me an injection to stop the vomiting. Since then, Aberystwyth harbour has been cleaned up massively, with a new sewage works. I didn't realise it was still as bad elsewhere.

Coastal areas are so much cleaner than in the 70s when was sailing the solent. As kids we used to sit on the end of the jetty at the Folly Inn and count the jonny`s going by on the ebb tide. Swimming at Bembridge was literally going through the motions. eeewwww.
