Uncertainty surrounds reports of a solo sailor's death when he fell 40 ft from his mast shortly after his yacht, Windrose, was boarded by Customs officers and he climbed the mast. The incident occurred at St Mary's Harbour in the Scilly Isles on Monday at around 8.30pm.

In a case that, to my knowledge has not been replicated in the sailing world, the Rescue Co-ordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) launched an investigation into claims that a bush walker had activated the beacon because he was running late. It is an interesting case for the sailor because of multiple opinions among sailors that often sailors activate their beacon because they are frightened.

Francis Joyon, aboard his maxi-trimaran, IDEC, is on course to reach the halfway point of his journey between New York and The Lizard this evening. While at lunchtime today, based on the mathematics, he was some 100 miles off the pace set by the current record-holder, Thomas Coville, the skipper of IDEC said he was pleased with the first part of the crossing.

Francis Joyon initiated his attempt to smash the outright solo sailing record this morning at 09:15:20 hrs UTC (11:15:20hrs CET). In order to beat the current record of 5 days, 19 hours, 30 minutes and 40 seconds held since July 2008 by Thomas Coville on his trimaran Sodebo, Joyon and his maxi-trimaran IDEC will have to cross the latitude of The Lizard by 0445hrs UTC (0645hrs CET) on 17th June.
