It was 'early in the morning' when officials were wondering 'What shall we do with a drunken sailor?'

He was so drunk he allowed his 28ft sailing boat to go ashore on a surfing beach (at least he missed the rocks). Then when authorities approached he was too drunk to get off the boat and collapsed into unconsciousness. He had to be lifted off the boat, which at time of writing was still embedded in the sand.

It happened in Laguna Beach in California, and it was Laguna Beach police who received the report of the 28-foot sailboat stuck offshore. Orange County Sheriff's Department Harbor Patrol and Laguna Beach lifeguards responded to the sailboat.

The keel of the 28-foot sloop was lodged in sand and rocks outside the surf line with its mast listing slightly.

The good news is that officials do not expect the vessel to break up, and there is no indication of oil or fuel leakage. Sheriff's deputies pulled the man off the boat. 'He was so extremely intoxicated that he was passed out,' said a spokesman.

The man was arrested and booked into the Laguna Beach jail on suspicion of boating under the influence of alcohol. His name was not immediately available, but officials said he was from San Diego and 47 years old. He was alone on the boat and unhurt, officials said.

The plan was to wait until the next high tide, at about 5 a.m., and then to tow the boat to Dana Point Harbor, where it would be inspected for damage.
