Are you finding that emails you want end up in Gmail's Spam bin, or just don't appear at all? We have uncovered the reason, and there is a solution.
Are you using Gmail, and noticed that your sailing newsletters have stopped arriving?
Last year Google introduced a new feature to its Inbox, which rated incoming emails as being 'Primary', 'Social' or 'Promotions'. It just changed your Inbox to work this way.
Sail-World newsletters are being classed as 'Social' or 'Promotions' and are often not picked up by email software such as Outlook or other mail clients. From testing done by Sail-World, we believe Gmail may be even more pernicious, and are applying arbitrary rules to the way your email is handled and sorted.
If you use www.gmail.com
to access your mail, you will only see the Sail-World newsletters by clicking the 'All Mail' option - which will show the mail in all three mail boxes.
You can turn off the tabbed Inbox feature by going to the Cogwheel in the uper right hand side and clicking the small down-arrow.
Pick the Configure Inbox option
Untick all the boxes (except Primary)
We used to recommend Gmail to our readers, but no more.
Our preferred email system and one we have found no issues with is Apple's icloud.com which like Gmail is also free - and it works exceptionally well with mobile devices. You'll get your own free email address such as email@example.com
, it will manage your contacts and mail. You can access it from any device, as you would with Outlook, or directly on the web by just entering www.icloud.com
into your favorite web browser.
We've used Apple's icloud.com system since its inception and have had no serious issues.
One of the many uses of the internet is to be able to subscribe to various email newsletters . Lately any of whese which use a Gmail address may also end up in the Gmail Spam bin. It's not just Sail-World newsletters, but the same is happening to many other sailing and business newsletters and news releases.
One of our editors found eight different newsletters, from different sailing organizations and sites - from just his subscriptions alone - all sitting in Spam. The Gmail handling of emails is quite random, and a mail from the same source can be marked as Promotional on one edition and Spam the next.
By now they are all stale news. Thanks Google. What were you saving us from? Ourselves?
We know that Gmail thinks it does a great job protecting our email box from real Spam, but this is just plain irritating. Other mail systems such as icloud.com do this without hiding emails from you, and do an equally good or better job of shifting obvious Spam mail.
We have been marking each sailing newsletter (when we find it) as ‘non-spam’, but to no avail. Every day back we go and find the newsletters we have subscribed to, in the Spam folder, and we mark them non-Spam.
That is supposed to be the solution, Google says ‘the system learns’. Hmmm, must be a very, very slow learner! Ever the optimists, we keep marking the marine newsletters ‘non-Spam’, but Gmail ignores that advice day after day.
You see, in the world of Spam, Gmail is convinced that words like 'Click here' are only used in Spam. ‘Click here to see the results from XYZ regatta’ seem pretty harmless to most sailors, one would have thought. But no… Gmail knows better. No matter that we put the sending address in our contact list… Gmail ignores that too!! Gmail does not trust us, it seems, even to manage our own contact list.
And when a Microsoft Office 360 password email is labelled as Spam by Gmail, you know its not just you.
But there is a solution and it works 100% of the time. We have found the ONLY way to be sure we receive the newsletters we want is to use the G-mail filter. Go to the Cogwheel > Settings > Filters > Create a New Filter, and enter:
Do this: Never send it to Spam
This is what you need to do to make sure that Gmail will ‘allow’ all the Sail-World and family newsletters. A similar process for all the newsletter you want.
Might be good tho' if the Not Spam function worked.
And of course you have to go into www.gmail.com
very regularly and trawl through the so-called Social, Promotional and Spam folders and undo the way Google/Gmail allocates the mail you have signed up to receive. Mail which is sent by any bulk mail system to a valid gmail.com address can be affected.
You do have better things to do don't you? You can put an end to this nonsense by voting with your mouse, and setting up a mail account with www.icloud.com
and using that address for your vital mail.
Sail-World is working with Google to try and rectify this situation, but we aren't holding our breath.
