OceansWatch needs your yacht for Pacific Projects in 2013

Chris Bone, energetic leader of OceansWatch here makes a moving plea for environmentally-minded yacht owners for the use of another boat to continue the fabulous work that the organisation does to assist Pacific Islanders cope with the multitude effects of world pollution, the disappearance of fish stocks and climate change.

OceansWatch needs your yacht for Pacific Projects in 2013. Yes that’s right, it may seem a rather audacious request but please read on!

Have you been keeping up with the news on climate change, over fishing, ocean acidification, plastics pollution and the other threats to your marine environment?

Have you perhaps noticed over your sailing career that things have got worse? Maybe there is more pollution at your local beach or what about those shellfish bans? Did they happen so much in the past? Can you still chuck a line out and catch a decent feed like you did when you were a kid? What do your parents or grandparents say about the marine environment in the old days? Remember those old black and white pics of the likes of Zane Gray with huge hauls of fish? Do you see that now?

Who snorkelled in the Caribbean 30 years ago and has gone again lately? Not like it was is it? There is absolutely no doubt whatsoever that the marine environment is in trouble, a lot of trouble.

How are all these threats to be stopped? What magic cure can you see on the horizon? Do you think your government is going to somehow legislate some clever cures? Are you expecting some major technical breakthrough that will 'fix' everything for you? Is everyone suddenly going to change in time? Does the evidence to date give you hope?

I for one do not think the miracle cure will come in time. I do not think any government will all of a sudden value our planet over growth.

I do not believe everyone is about to have an environmental epiphany and change their habits overnight. What I believe is that we have to do something now, it is our responsibility and it is you and it is me that have to take action. What am I doing? I am running an organisation that’s designed to help you help others and help the marine environment.

OceansWatch is here to facilitate for you to make a difference, for you to take action. There are many ways we can work together so spend some time on our website and you will find a role but right now what we need is another yacht to borrow for a few months.

We need another yacht because we have lots of work to do, work that will make a significant difference to the marine environment and to many people. We have a great program going in the Solomon Islands. We are changing lives, we are creating Marine Reserves, we are making a significant difference. The people there are embracing us, are getting empowered to take charge and to manage their own resources sustainably. We need another yacht to go to other Islands that have invited us.

Why lend your yacht? Ok, let us address some of your concerns. Will it be safe is usually number 1 question. Yes it will. It will be run by a professional skipper, either myself or another OceansWatch skipper. Both of us have skippered >150,000nm and we are good at our jobs. We have a very good record and know how to look after yachts very well.

Will it be looked after? Yes it will, being ex charter skippers we know how to keep a yacht really ship shape. We are also very proud of the organisation we represent and how your yacht looks is a reflection of our competence and the organisation.

Will it cost? No, very unlikely as we cover all costs on the trip and routine maintenance. We will negotiate a written MOU with you. We are not here however to take over an 'old dog' and fix it up for you so please be realistic with your expectations.

Remember that lending it to us means 6 months of not paying marina fees! Can you trust us? Yes you can. We have two yachts loaned to us right now and will put serious potential lenders in direct contact with the owners of the other yachts for references.

When is the boat needed? ASAP please, we want to leave early May. We are looking for yachts in New Zealand, the East coast of Australia or on the West coast of the USA, Central or South America.
