ANZAC 18ft Series: Big breeze plays havoc with Kiwis on Day 1

A big breeze on the first day of the 2013 ANZAC regatta has left more than half the fleet scrabbling to effect repairs in order to resume racing tomorrow. The Kiwi teams in particular were the ones to suffer the most, with torn main sails, snapped masts, wing and hull damage.

The Australian crews don’t appear to be suffering from a lack of local knowledge, with wins in both the day’s races going to crews from across the ditch - Kenwood taking out race one, and Thurlow Fisher Lawyers winning race two. Although, they have yet to come up with the consistency required to knock off Kiwi hot-shots Yamaha Grey and C-Tech, who, with a second and third each are sitting tied for first on six points, one point clear of Kenwood.

Todays conditions were testing at best, with 20+ knots of wind against strong tide making the harbour choppy, with a number of crews getting some swimming practice. All the crews should be back out there tomorrow, with the exception of Yamaha White, who’s torn mainsail is likely to be written off.

ASCC have been fortunate enough to find a replacement mast and will look to put some good results on the board in the remainder of the regatta. Events Clothing has begun repairs to their wing and barring any complications will be do the same.

Racing continues on Friday, Saturday and Sunday with two races per day being sailed.
